In Ferguson Missouri the grand jury ruled on not indicting the police offer who shot an unarmed black teenager a few months ago and it has stirred controversy in the African - American community. Although I am strongly against the violence that has followed the decision I have strong convictions about the decision.A grand jury investigation isn't supposed a trial. Regardless of whether or not you believe Wilson should be arrested, it's quite clear that this was handled improperly. All sorts of conflicting evidence has popped up over the last three months (which by the way is ridiculously long for a grand jury to convene). It's not the grand jury's place to say whether that he should be convicted beyond a reasonable doubt, just that there's "probable cause" that a crime was committed, hence a trial should be conducted. That the prosecutor couldn't get an indictment is a gross distortion of an already distorted criminal justice system.Rioters" and "protestors" are not synonyms. There were peaceful protests going on even as rioters were burning buildings and looting businesses. That's easy to overlook, since television feeds gravitated towards conflict. Because conflict = ratings. Regardless if you believe the rioters need to be condemned, conflating them with the entire population of Ferguson doesn't accomplish anything. It's quite counterproductive. Nobody conflates the city of San Francisco with the assclown smashing car windows after the Giants won the World Series. Nobody conflates all Penn State students with the people that rioted after Joe Paterno was fired. Nobody conflates all WASPY New Englanders with the people in Keene, New Hampshire. I wonder why. If you don't want to acknowledge the racism of the situation, just remember that the peaceful protestors repeatedly tried to get the violent people out of the crowd and prevent them from escalating a conflict.
