Yet another NBA owner is due to sell his team due to recently discovered racist comments .Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson is selling his part in the team after emails were received of him talking about how the black people in the stadiums are scaring away all the white customers. Levenson however was the one who brought this email to the NBA unlike the situation with Donald Sterling.
However what he is saying can in fact be true.There are white people that are intimidated by large groups of black people and there are black people intimidated by large groups of white people. In my opinion this does not make him a racist,it just makes someone in a high position that explained his feelings in an ignorant manor. Levenson says “My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant season ticket base. Please dont get me wrong. There was nothing threatening going on in the area back then. i never felt uncomfortable, but i think southern whites simply were not comfortable being in an arena or at a bar where they were in the minority. On fan sites i would read comments about how dangerous it is around philips yet in our 9 years, i don’t know of a mugging or even a pick pocket incident. This was just racist garbage. When I hear some people saying the arena is in the wrong place I think it is code for there are too many blacks at the games.”
What he is saying is not far from the truth,in fact many people will describe a neighborhood with mostly black people as a "bad neighborhood" no matter if no violence or illegal matters take place there or not.In his emails he seems to be ashamed of this fact ,and his intentions seem truthful but not intentionally harmful to any race.
